Quick question: Estate planning basics across borders

With the World Cup coming to North America this summer, I’ve been thinking about a simple content series tied to participating countries - just the basics of how estate/inheritance taxes work in different countries around the world, and where things get messy when families have ties to the US/Mexico/Canada.

Not looking to write a treatise - more like “here are 3-4 things that commonly trip people up when dealing with cross-border estates between the US.”

I know there are the jurisdictional reports, but think this could be more fun to do as a collaboration.

For those of you working outside the US (or regularly handling cross-border matters with US clients):

  • What are the 2-3 most common misconceptions or mistakes you see?

  • How is life insurance typically used (or should be used) in estate planning in your jurisdiction?

Goal is awareness and conversation, not comprehensive technical guidance. Trying to gauge if there’s interest before I put fingers to keyboard.

Thoughts?
